I need to know how much taxes I will have to pay to import a new $2590
USD computer into Mexico from the US. The package will be shipped using FEDEX.Howdy tresd2-ga,
Yes, if you eliminate any 3rd party insurance, that is, the computer is
not insured at all, then the tax on the computer falls into the far more
reasonable range of $388 to $426. I got just short of $270 for shipping
as well. My apologies on not working up some estimates based on that the
first time through.
Don't be surprised if Mexican customs goes with the "84714101" Harmonized
Code instead of "84714901" which in turn will make the VAT be in the upper
range above. Also don't be surprised if they place a somewhat arbitrary
insurance value on it as well. From my reading, the word "arbitrary" is
at times very applicable when it comes to the Mexican customs process.
My pleasure!

Looking Forward, denco-ga - Google Answers ResearcherHowdy tresd2-ga,
It depends on several factors, such as the final destination (the
province), etc. but FedEx has a great tool to get an estimate on
these kinds of things. It requires getting a free account. Once
you are logged on, look under the "International Tools" menu for
"Estimate Duties and Taxes" and go from there.

I used the "Harmonized Code" of "84714101" which appears to be the
appropriate one for a computer.
I ran the following numbers to get a range.
Province NORTH FRONTIER ZONE
Duty and Tax Estimate 792.00 USD
Freight/Transportation 100.00 USD
Insurance 2590.00 USD
Customs Value of Goods 2590.00 US
Province OTHER
Duty and Tax Estimate 853.50 USD
Freight/Transportation 100.00 USD
Insurance 3000.00 USD
Customs Value of Goods 2590.00 USD
So, you are looking at around $790 to $860 in Value Added Tax (VAT).
If you need any clarification, please feel free to ask.

Looking Forward, denco-ga - Google Answers ResearcherHello thank you for answering. I get a very different total. The
applicable code from what I've found using the fedex tool is (84714901
- Other, entered in the form of systems) the total without shipping
comes up to:
Duty and Tax Estimate 388.50 USD
I'm not sure about what you wrote in the Insurance field, it states
that FedEx does not sell shipment insurance and I doubt I'd have to
pay 100% the value for insurance so lets suppose it won't be insured.
My total for the shipping alone is aroud $250 USD but I didn't state
where the item is located and to where it will ship, weight and
dimensions in the original question.
So just to be sure could you recheck
Shipping from Oklahoma city zip code 73003 to Guadalajara zip code 44290
weight is 45 lbs a little less
dimensions are about 28.0x14.0x23.0 in
Thank youOk thanks for your help. Just to let you know I decided for USPS
instead of FedEx and the others. Shipping this package will be $140 2
to 3 days service Including + $16 insurance for up to $2,400 so this a
better deal. Taxes will be the same of course. Thanks again.
