Can I Use AA Tix on DL?

Escrito el 9 de January del 2009 por cfz.
  • Evening, everyone. Here's a rule I don't know about. I have a C ticket on AA for tomorrow afternoon, but want to leave in the morning instead. AA is full, but there are seats on DL. Can I take my ticket to DL, or does it have to be endorsed by AA first?

  • However, if your company has a deal with AA then the ticket could be used only by AA. Otherwise any airline will take the ticket.

  • Apparently it's not a problem on full-fare tickets. You must have a paper ticket, though, not an e-ticket. My ticket was in Business and DL readily accepted it - I made a reservation over the phone and handed over my AA ticket at the counter. No questions asked!

  • I'm not sure how that works, freakflyer. My company definitely has a volume deal with AA and gets rebates back every year. But I don't think that's indicated anywhere on the ticket. At any rate, my ticket was booked through my corporate travel department and DL took it with no problems.

  • Thanks for the info jAAck. Nice to know for when I do actually have a full fare ticket....

  • jAAck:

My understanding is that you cannot simply move to DL just because you want to leave earlier. The only time I am aware that you can cross over to another carrier is when AA cannot supply the flight to you (ie, cancelled) and DL offers a flight in it's place.

If you want DL, I believe you will have to pay full-fare to them (and get a refund from AA based on the ticket you have).

Although, I would definately like to know if I am wrong here. But I don't think I am (based on discussions with a lot of colleagues who flight weekly).

  • You are probably seeing Y/xxxxx, where the xxxxx is a code given by AA to your company which indicates the type of discount to be given. Somewhere on the ticket it probably also says something like "Valid AA Only". Yes, I suspect other airlines will take the ticket, but you should check with your corporate travel department first. It is possible that AA could come back to your company with a bill for the difference between what they paid AA for the ticket and what AA had to pay the other carrier for the flight. If AA endorses the ticket to another carrier due to a disruption of service, then you should be ok (and don't forget in that case to ask for miles for both flights!).

  • Freakflyer, I don't your statement is necessarily true. My company has a deal with AA, and most tickets have a fare code of "YXXXX", where "XXXX" is an abbreviation of my company name.

As long as it's a "Y"-type fare, even with the additional letters, other airlines have taken them with absolutely no problem.
