How can you tell if my rat has allergies or a cold?

Escrito el 9 de January del 2009 por anonym.
  • she keeps sneezing and when she breathes theres a wheezing sound but i can tell its from her nose, not her lungs or chest area

  • tray asking a vet or someone at a pet shop

  • I can't diagnose your furry friend, but I can suggest you clean her cage and bedding. If that doesn't help, go see the vet. Hopefully he can help you.

    Good luck, fellow rat lover.

  • Change her substrate. If she doesn't stop sneezing after you do it can be pneumonia. Taker her to the vet because if you wait too long then the pneumonia cannot get treated. One rat at the zoo had pneumonia and they gave him medicine but he had pneumonia until they had to put him down.

  • Sounds like a respiratory infection. A dusty substrate is the number 1 cause of this. A vet visit is needed to cure it.

  • Take her to the vet, she probably has a respiratory infection. Pine and cedar bedding are often the cause of this, so if you are using that kind of bedding, switch to Carefresh, Yesterday's News, aspen, or any bedding made from recycled paper. Also, rats can die in a couple of days, so schedule the appointment immediately.

  • i agree with 'clomo', has she got pine bedding, thats really bad for rats brething and skin, causes lots of problems, mab serch on all the types of bedding that are usable on rats.
also, i would take your beloved rat to a vet. it needs care by the sound, ino if my dogs or cats were doing that i would take to the vet instantly, if you dont wanna take her to the vet instantly you can ring thm, they will help you in some way or form.

    hope i helped.
    hope your rattie gets well.=/

  • Take her to the vet, and try a round of antibiotics. If there is no change, then it could be allergies. If you switch to something else (For example, if you use aspen, try Yesterday's news, as pellets usually have less dust.) and it gets better, it could be allergies. Personally, I'd lean that an upper respiratory infection was more likely, so it'd be best off to try treating it with antibiotics first.

  • from the sneezing plus wheezing she likely has a respiratory infection. take her to the vet asap!

  • if he sneezes
    he likes obama

you must be voting for mccain

  • If you are using wood shavings / sawdust change it for wood chip litter and change bedding for loo roll or kitchen roll. If its just an allergy (like one of my boys had) it should clear up within 24hours.

If it doesn't clear it could be a cold or slight respiratory problem. Try sitting over a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head and the rat on your shoulder, if its a cold this should help unblock his airways.

If there is still no improvement a trip to the vet is your best bet! ;o)
