Is rat a good pet for a 13 year old boy?
Escrito el 9 de January del 2009 por jane.I would strongly recommend that you look for a reputable rattery in your area. A rattery is a breeder who has established lines, is a genetic expert, and usually specializes in one or more specific types of rat, ie, Dumbo, Rex or a specific color. You can find more details and recommendations about what to look for for choosing a breeder here: http://blackwolfrattery.com/gpage3.html
If there isn't a rattery close by, you might choose to look for a rescue. Rescues take in rats, make sure they're properly socialized, and find them their forever homes. When dealing with a reputable rescue, you're saving an unwanted animal, and getting a rat who's been screened for socialization and personality issues.
As I said, rats are intelligent and social, so they need to be kept in same sex pairs or groups. Two rats are really no more trouble to keep than one rat, and are much less likely to develop anti-social habits.
You'll need to locate a good small-animal, rat expert vet before bringing your rats home. The time to find a vet is not the night you come home to find one of your rats has injured him/herself and is bleeding, or when your rat starts sneezing with an upper respiratory infection.
Like all animals, rats have specialized needs in regard to food, care and housing. For more detailed information on keeping rats, please visit some of the wonderful forums for rat lovers like www.BruxnBoggle.com and www.RatsRule.com.
Good luck!

I say, even though boys like that stuff, go with gerbils.
They are cute, fun, loving, cheap, active, cuddly, cool, and low maintenance.
Seriously, rats aren't that cute, but they are cuddly.
They can be cute though, but their tails sort of, well yeah. I'M NOT TRYING TO GT ON ANYONES BAD SIDE! PLEASE DON'T GET MAD AT ME!!! :) :D
Rats who are looked after well, handled often and let out to exercise will in general be happy clean rats and should not bite (Although they do love to nibble on fingers toes and ears, lol!)
You will have to explain to him that they do need alot of care and attention (in a way they are like mini dogs) they need exercise everyday and need to be handled every day. Food, bedding and soiled patches in their cage should be changed everyday and the whole cage every week.
If looked after properly they can trained to do tricks, answer to their names and love to be picked up and played with.
The most expensive thing would be the cage, rats need a large cage that allows them to play and climb and plenty to keep them entertained. The cage is the most important thing and you must get the right size, the bigger the better. (my two boys is over 4ft tall and 4ft wide)
They need at least an hours exercise and handling out of the cage every day. If this seems like to much then rats are not for you, go for something that requires a lot less effort like a goldfish! Hahaha!
But sometimes you get a unique warerat and they turn into a wolf at nite , i am now in a wheelchair and the rat has stole my family , so make sure u keep it away from a full moon.
Im only kiddin , rats are brilliant pets i would realy recomend one for your son , i am also 13 and i love them loads , but can't have one cos they stink and bite realy hard .
so yeah get im a rat , and see haw long he has 10 fingers for .
Basic Info:
1. Rats are social animals, get at least 2.
2. Rats are the most intelligent rodents, almost as smart and trainable as a dog.
3. Rats are friendly, and love to cuddle and play.
4. Male rats are generally lazier than females, females being more energetic and playful. Both are great pets, and each have there own personality. You can have an active male rat and a lazy female rat.
5. Rats can be taught basic tricks.
6. Fruits and veggies make good treats for rats. Make sure any treat is safe before giving it to your pet. My rats favorites are bananas, raisins, and peas.
7. Rats, especially babies, may poop or pee in undesirable places.
8. Average lifespan is short, about 2-4 years.
9. Rats get sick very easily, require many vet trips.
Will your son:
1. Play with the rats at least an hour a day.
2. Feed them a good healthy rat food. Kaytee and Mazuri are unhealthy, Oxbow or Harlan Tekland 2014, 2016, or 2018 are better choices. http://www.kimsarkrescue.org/content/vie...
3. Give the rats an adequate cage, go with wire bars, as aquariums lack ventilation. I say bigger is better, try not to go smaller than 8 square feet. This is a good cage. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...
4. Decorate the cage with tubes, hammocks, paper bags, boxes, and any other safe item. http://www.flickr.com/photos/braindamage...

5. Don't use pine or cedar bedding in the cage, those brands have been known to cause respiratory infections. Try aspen, Carefresh, or Yesterday's News.
6. Do you have a vet who will care for rats?
7. Will you clean the cage when it smells?
8. Will you be patient and handle them gently?
9. Will you do lots of fun things with your rats? http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm
I know some of the info on these sites contradict what I told you, but there is no 100% correct answer for some things.
O and yes they are good pets. They are very intelligent.
=)
