Margins do not fit page size

Escrito el 9 de January del 2009 por webmaster.
  • Have come across a problem in Office XP (10.3506.3501 SP-1). About 12/15 Excel spreadsheets when put into print preview come up with the message margins do not fit page size . However, in the page setup everything is OK. When you view the docs showing the page breaks, there are breaks all over the place. One doc is 1 page long, but in print preview it shows up as 12448 pages! We ve tried clearing all contents of unused cells and have have removed page breaks by resetting all page breaks. This is happening on all computers with Office XP Standard (OEM version) and all the updates have been installed. However, it doesn t happen with my version of Office XP Professional! (the version number is the same as that for the Standard version).

    Any help would be appreciated.

  • I ve tried the workarounds suggested in the website and this is what I ve found.

As far as Workaround 2 is concerned, ie changing paper size or page orientation and closing the Page Setup before going back in again and changing the margins - there is nothing to change. The only thing I did notice is that the doc is scaled to 10% to fit 1 page, but this happens when I open the doc on my PC and there is no problem.

On the other PC I copied the doc to a new worksheet and it was OK except it was 2 pages long (one line of text went over the page). I then went in and selected the option to fit to 1 page (the scaling went to 10%) and I ended up with the same problem again (12448 pages!!!). I changed the scaling back to 100% again and the doc was OK, so I adjusted the top margin to fit in the extra line that was causing the problem and the doc is still OK.

I am coming to the conclusion I may need to reinstall the printer driver - what do you think?

  • Quite annoying bug. I´ve came across it several times.
Try just selecting another printer and clicking page break preview again.
Hope it works! (worked in my laptop)

  • I don t mean to state the obvious, but when you say clearing all contents of unused cells do you mean the contents of the cells only, or have you chose to remove the formatting and contents?

    J/C

  • I know what the clear contents is

  • I ve heard this before and don t recall if there was ever a solution provided, but I don t think so.

Then I found this, tho it s a little outdated. When we get this one resolved, I need to post it on our Excel page so I DON T FORGET the fix!

  • Just to keep you up-to-date, we had software/printer driver reinstalled on this PC today and it hasn t solved the problem. The only way round it is to copy the text into a new document, although sometimes when selecting to fit the doc into one page it scales it to 10% and the same problems arises again.

  • Clear Cell Contents is when you select all the cells outside the area of the spreadsheet that are not required. You select the cells, right click and select Clear Contents - just in case there is a character in a cell way outside the actual document and Excel thinks the document extends the whole way to that cell.

Also, when the documents are viewed in Page Break Preview, there are blue lines around each cell - but when viewed on my computer these don t appear. Originally I thought maybe the docs were corrupted, but they view, print etc. OK on my computer but not on the others.

  • I was getting the error notice "Margins do not fit page size" when previewing or trying to do a page setup then I remembered that our printer had been worked on earlier in the day. I simply went to "File" "Print" and reselected the printer and the error message did not appear again. Seems like reselection resets the correct printer driver.

  • Someone emailed me with this:

I, too, have been wrestling with this and just discovered it's a known bug on the Microsoft website. See
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q305713
    for patches and workarounds.

  • I ve seen the problem and am busting my brain trying to remember the details.. but we ve got 97 here.. so it s not necessarily an xp problem.

have you tried just copying the required cells to a new workbook? not the entire sheet - just the parts you want?

    set the print area?
